Default retirement age is scrapped by govt

People in sales jobs will be able to work past the age of 65 without being forced to retire, following proposals published for consultation by the government.

The new administration revealed that the current default retirement age of 65 will be abandoned by October 2011, as the government aims to help and encourage people in sales jobs and other roles to work for longer "against the backdrop of demographic change".

Employment relations minister Edward Davey said that with more and more people wanting to extend their working lives, the move will give them "greater choice".

"Older workers bring with them a wealth of talent and experience as employees and entrepreneurs. They have a vital contribution to make to our economic recovery and long-term prosperity," he explained.

The new consultation also proposes to help employers by removing the "administrative burden" of statutory retirement procedures.

Recently, Rachel Krys, campaign director for the Employers Forum on Age, said that the best workforces are often made up of people representing a very broad age spectrum, with older people often providing vital experience.
