CBI: Improved infrastructure could boost sales jobs

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has backed Boris Johnson's plans to boost business in the capital by improving transport links.

Reacting to a speech, which the mayor of London gave to business leaders at an event hosted by Baker & McKenzie, the CBI said that projects, such as Crossrail and the modernisation of the Tube, could help firms to flourish.

"With confidence among London's businesses continuing to improve, Boris is right to bang the drum for continued investment in the capital’s infrastructure. Businesses tell the CBI that the mayor is having a positive impact on London’s reputation," said Nigel Bourne, CBI director of the London region.

He added that Mr Johnson must do everything he can to ensure the capital remains attractive to business, allowing London to maintain competitive on the world stage, as this will be important to the UK economy as a whole.

During his speech, Mr Johnson said that London was the "engine room" of the UK and that cutting transport investment would put the UK at a competitive disadvantage.
