Flexible retirement choices should be available
People enjoying their sales jobs should be allowed to work for longer, according to one expert, who said the current retirement age breeds negative stereotypes about ageing and older people.
Claire Nurden, research and policy officer for Independent Age, said that the current retirement age for older workers is outdated and produces negativity aimed at mature employees.
"In many cases, an easier transition to retired life could be achieved with a gradual reduction in working hours rather than the retirement cliff edge older people are currently faced with," she said.
The expert added that flexible retirement procedures would make things better for older workers and help them get accustomed to post-work life.
A survey, commissioned by Age UK, revealed that 65 per cent of the public think the government should scrap forced retirement law immediately and seven in ten people believe employers should not be allowed to force people to retire just because they have reached a certain age.
