Sustainable practices 'grow in importance'
Businesses need to avoid becoming bogged down in carbon reduction measures and open their eyes to other issues which can help improve sustainability.
That is the message from Peter McManners, visiting executive fellow of Henley Business School at the University of Reading, who told attendees at Sustainabilitylive! that businesses can sometimes forget about things like biofuels and focus solely on carbon reduction instead.
It is a shift in business strategy which may influence all levels of the company, from sales recruitment to production, with the expert urging companies to be proactive and establish a viable sustainability strategy.
"Whatever businesses do with regards to climate and the regulations that are coming through with regards to carbon, it has got to be as part of a sustainable business strategy," he stated.
The Carbon Reduction Commitment requires all large public and private sector organisations to subscribe to a mandatory scheme that aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce the amount of CO2 emitted in the UK.
