Volunteering can help to bolster jobseekers
Volunteering helps people to gain skills that will make them more employable, according to an expert, who said that it can also enable jobseekers to improve their own well being.
Justin Davis Smith, chief executive of Volunteering England, said that volunteering has become even more popular during the economic downturn as people try to expand their skillset - something which could help those looking for sales jobs.
"The recession has made volunteering even more significant for individuals who find through volunteering ways to prepare for career opportunities or to build new interests in life," he said.
Mr Davis added that short-term or micro-volunteering has become more popular due to the increased demands on people's time, yielding the possibility of a short-term stint.
Volunteering England and Jobcentre Plus have recently signed an agreement to promote the value of volunteering to jobseekers in England which will tackle any barriers they might face when trying to get involved.
