Culture of diversity 'attracts best jobseekers'

Employers should ensure that they foster a culture of diversity if they are to get the most from their hiring policies, according to a leading recruitment trade organisation.

Sarah Gordon, chair of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's (REC) diversity and inclusion forum, this week hosted a meeting of REC members interested in developing their organisation's ability to recruit from a wide pool of people.

In order to benefit, Ms Gordon said the virtues of diversity must be embedded throughout the organisation, with those engaged in recruitment and 'champions' at all levels of the business needing to understand its importance.

"More often than not, recruiters find that decisions made at the top to improve the diversity of an organisation do not filter through to the rest of the organisation," she said. "Line managers who ultimately make the recruitment decisions need to understand why diversity is important."

It is advice which will apply equally to those in sales manager jobs, with a diversity-focussed approach ensuring they are casting their net wide enough to recruit the top talent and that they are following best practice advice.

Diversity is also a regulatory issue, with the principle of equal opportunities enshrined in law. Beachcroft LLP employment partner and head of diversity Rachel Dineley recently told Croner that the Equality Bill, now in its final stages of approval in Parliament, will help to simplify the existing rules on workplace discrimination, making it easier to understand for those without an employment law background.
