Scheme launched to help people with learning difficulties

A new initiative has been launched to help people with learning difficulties find paid sales jobs.

The government scheme will aim to improve statistics which show that fewer than ten per cent of people with learning difficulties in England are in paid employment, which can lead them to greater disadvantages and social exclusion.

Phil Hope, care services minister, said that being employed offers many benefits both to a person's pocket and to their sense of independence.

"I've met many people with learning disabilities who would love the chance to get a job but too often they find it incredibly hard to overcome the barriers they face. Personal budgets allow them to get the tailored job support they need," he added.

Mr Hope also said that this pilot scheme will set out to show how many more people with learning difficulties can work in sales jobs.

The initiative is set to benefit people living in Essex, Northamptonshire, the London Borough of Newham, Herefordshire, Leicester, North Tyneside and Oldham.
