Beer tax freeze 'could save thousands of sales jobs'
The government should put a freeze on beer tax in order to save hundreds of thousands of jobs, according to an expert.
Recommendations by the British Beer & Pub Association said that ale should be taxed at a lower rate of duty to reflect its status as low-strength.
It added that such a move would help people working in sales jobs for British pubs and brewery firms, with over 400,000 UK jobs depending directly on the production and distribution of beer.
Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the association, said: "By treating beer differently in duty rates we can support a home-grown industry and safeguard thousands of jobs. It is time to give beer a break and show that the Government is serious about backing the British pub."
The proposal by the association comes ahead of the Treasury's announcement of the March budget, which could have an affect on sales recruitment in the UK.
