'Worst appears to be over' in jobs market
Sales recruitment hopefuls have been told that "the worst appears to be over" in the jobs market, after new figures were revealed.
According to data published by the Office for National Statistics, unemployment dropped in the three months to November, making it the first decrease since May 2008.
The number of those out of work fell by 7,000 over the last quarter, lowering the total of people out of work to 2.46 million.
Thomas Usher, research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, said that, while some analysts have been surprised at the findings, he was not.
"We've been looking at the figures on people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance for a few months. Those have been declining already, and they are slightly more up-to-date figures," he added.
Mr Usher also said that while it was difficult to pinpoint why unemployment has fallen so far short of what was expected, he told sales recruitmenthopefuls that the labour market has performed much better in this recession than in previous ones.
