New work placement subsidy 'should be introduced'
A new six-month work placement subsidy of £1,250 should be introduced to help get 16 to 17 year-olds who have been unemployed for more than six months back into sales jobs, according an expert.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has said that this would help to combat an "alarming rise" in the number of young unemployed people.
Gerwyn Davies, CIPD public policy adviser, said that although he welcomes the government's new January guarantee, which will offer a place in learning to all young people who are not in training employment, education or training, it might not offer a full solution.
"Giving young people education places and formal training opportunities is a laudable aim and one we support. The work placement idea however would give more young people the opportunity to learn key employability skills, and give employers greater flexibility around training opportunities," he added.
The new January guarantee will be backed by £40 million of additional investment to help young people achieve sales recruitment success.
