Immigration points system is 'very important to our economy'

Sales recruitment can be boosted by continuing to attract the "brightest and best" immigrant workers, according to new recommendations.

Professor David Metcalfe, chair of the Migration Advisory Committee, said that the highly-skilled route of the points-based immigration system is very important to the UK economy.

Unveiling new recommendations, which include allowing people into the country under the Tier 1 General Route who have an undergraduate degree as their highest qualification, Professor Metcalfe said that he wants to attract people to work in the top ten per cent of graduate jobs.

"Therefore, it [the points-based system] should be maintained and improved in order to ensure that the UK continues to attract the brightest and best. Immigration should not serve as a disincentive to employers to invest in training to improve the skills of workers in Britain," he added.

Phil Woolas, the immigration minister, said that the points-based system is a powerful and flexible tool which means that businesses can recruit the skilled foreign workers that the economy needs.
