Employers 'need clarity' over internships rules
Employers encouraging people to take internships in sales jobs need to be clear about what they can legally do.
Rachel Krys, campaign director of the Employers Forum on Age, said that businesses need to be very clear and given the right information about what they can and cannot do in terms of work experience and internships.
"We either are encouraging volunteering or we are not. Employers need to be told what is lawful and what is not and the government need to take the initiative there," she added.
Ms Krys also commented that it was a well established fact that if people are unemployed for a long time early on in their career then that has a detrimental effect on future employment.
Her words came as former Bank of England labour market expert Professor David Blanchflower issued a warning on youth unemployment in sales jobs, stating that "the slowing this month is a lull before the storm".
