Managers 'should improve skills in downturn'

Managers should seek to improve their people skills in the current economic climate, it has been claimed.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, managers should be able to spot the early warning signs of stress and provide support to help people struggling to cope, as well as improve the efficiency of their staff.

Ben Willmott, senior public policy adviser at the group, commented: "They also need to invest in developing their line managers' people management skills, particularly in the area of coaching and performance management."

He went on to say that the new quarterly Employee Outlook survey carried out by the organisation indicates that the net proportion of people satisfied with their job has increased to 46 per cent from 26 per cent in 2006, despite the economic climate.

Last week, IT training provider 01zero-one commented that sales managers should streamline their approach to work in order to guide their teams through the economic downturn.
