Firms 'should focus on employee experience'

Companies should look to improve the quality of the employment experiences they offer in order to recruit and retain the best staff in the difficult economic climate, it has been claimed.

According to Dr Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, director of employment advice group the Sloan Center, it is in employers' interests to improve aspects of the workplace experience.

She added that these could include training and development, workplace flexibility, compensation and benefits, and relationships with supervisors.

Director of the MetLife Mature Market Institute Sandra Timmermann added: "Employers will increasingly place a premium on having fully-engaged employees, as workers who are disengaged represent lost productivity and innovation."

Last week, reporter Maggie Mallon wrote in the Guardian that internships can help job candidates stand out from the crowd and improve their chances of securing employment.

She added that the ongoing recession means the competition for employment positions is greater than ever.
