EU fails to reach deal on working time opt-out

Written by Paul Goatman.

The UK government has not yet reached a deal on the working time directive, after continuing to refuse the removal of the opt-out.

Discussions in Brussels on the European Union Working Time Directive ended without a conclusion after the UK said it wanted to retain the ability for UK workers to opt-out of the 48-hour week.

Pat McFadden, the employment relations minister, says the government is resisting the change as he believes everyone has the right to choose the hours they work.

"In the current downturn it is more important than ever that people keep the right to put more money in their pockets by working longer hours if they wish," he adds.

The government minister states the deal would be a bad one for Britain, with more talks expected to be rearranged later this month.

It was revealed in December that European MPs had voted in favour of ending Britain's right to opt out of the directive.
