Management and leadership training 'most important'

UK companies are prioritising management and leadership development in the difficult economic climate, it has been revealed.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), training and developing staff remains an important strategy for employers despite the economic downturn.

Research carried out by the group found seven in ten employers say learning and development remains a high priority regardless of the financial situation, while 81 per cent of around 900 learning, training and development managers stated that training of management and leadership as the most important skill to help firms meet their business objectives.

Claire McCartney, learning, training and development adviser at the CIPD, said the recession is undoubtedly placing pressure on training budgets, but there is no evidence of them being slashed indiscriminately.

"A skilled and motivated workforce will be essential to ensure organisations are well placed to take advantage of the recovery when it comes," she added.

Last week, Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that in the current market recruiters are particularly looking for the skills that make a candidate different and the extra qualities that they can bring to a role.
