Manager-employee understanding 'vital'

Sales managers are better able to motivate their staff if they understand how they process information and make use of their energies, it has been claimed.

According to consultancy The Performance Solution, this understanding can help build rapport and help workers feel more accepted, while encouraging higher performance levels.

Managing director of the group Sally Vanson said it is particularly important for companies to invest in their employees in the current uncertain economic climate.

She added: "We need to know how to motivate them to get optimum results and so maximum return on our investment. It can save so much time and effort if we can get this information."

Earlier this week, David Fairhurst, senior vice president of McDonald's, said firms that invest in skills training now will recover most easily from the economic downturn.

He added that companies are already seeing "sustained benefits" from investing in people in the face of the recession.
